AI agent examples: real use cases your business can build, Makeitfuture AI agents guide

AI agent examples include support agents that resolve tickets, sales agents that qualify leads and book calls, and finance agents that match invoices to purchase orders, each taking multi-step actions toward a goal rather than waiting for a prompt.

Search "AI agent examples" and you meet the same cast every time: an autonomous software engineer, a global bank's data platform, a research lab running swarms of sub-agents. Impressive, and not much help if you run a 50-person company. This guide groups real AI agents by the job they do, shows the version a growing business can build, and covers how they work, where they fail and how to start. The timing matters: Gartner expects 40% of enterprise applications to include task-specific AI agents by the end of 2026, up from less than 5% in 2025.

What is an AI agent?

Google Cloud defines AI agents as software systems that use AI to pursue goals and complete tasks on behalf of users, with the ability to reason, plan and remember. The working distinction for a business is simple: a chatbot answers, an agent acts.

Ask a chatbot to chase an overdue invoice and it writes you a polite reminder to send. An agent finds the invoice in your accounting system, checks whether the payment has landed, drafts the chase in your tone, and either sends it or queues it for your approval.

That is also why "Is ChatGPT an AI agent?" has a two-part answer. On its own, ChatGPT is an assistant: it responds, then waits for the next prompt. Give a model tools, memory and permission to take several steps toward a goal, and it becomes agentic.

How does an AI agent work?

Under the hood, almost every business agent has the same five parts, whichever platform it runs on.

  • A goal. A clear instruction such as "qualify every inbound lead and book a call with the good ones". The tighter the goal, the more reliable the agent.
  • A language model. The reasoning engine (Claude, GPT, Gemini or an open-source model such as Llama) reads the situation and decides the next step.
  • Tools. The actions the agent is allowed to take: search the CRM, read an email, create an invoice, post in Slack. Without tools, a model can only talk.
  • Memory and context. Your documents, past tickets, product data and the history of the current task, so the agent works from your facts rather than general knowledge.
  • Guardrails. Limits on what it may do alone, approval steps for anything involving money or customers, and logs of every action.

The agent runs in a loop: it reads the input, plans a step, calls a tool, checks the result, and repeats until the goal is met or it hands the case to a person. Most of the engineering effort goes into the tools and guardrails, which is why connecting an agent to your existing systems matters more than the choice of model.

AI agent examples by business function

The useful way to read agent examples is by the job they do. Here are published examples from named companies, collected in Evidently AI's roundup of AI agent examples, each paired with the version a growing business can realistically build.

AI agent examples across five business functions: sales, customer support, operations and data, finance, and marketing.

Sales and lead generation

Netguru built Omega, a multi-agent system that supports its sales workflow, with specialised agents preparing for calls and tracking deals. The version most companies need is narrower and still worth building: an agent that watches your CRM, enriches and qualifies each inbound lead, drafts a first reply and books the call. For outbound, an AI SDR agent for outbound sales researches prospects and writes personalised first messages for a person to approve. Both sit at the heart of an AI-assisted sales process.

Quoting and proposals

Quotes are where many B2B sales stall, because someone has to read the request, check prices and availability, and assemble a document. An AI quotation agent reads incoming RFQs from email or a web form, builds the quote from your price lists and rules, and follows up automatically if the customer goes quiet.

Customer support

Intercom's Fin Voice answers customer phone calls and escalates to a human when needed. Your build is a support agent grounded in your help centre and past tickets that drafts or sends replies, with a person approving anything sensitive. That guardrail is the point of a well-scoped customer support AI agent. On the phone, the same idea becomes an AI receptionist, which we cover on our conversational AI and AI receptionist page.

Operations and data

Uber's Finch is a conversational agent that turns finance teams' plain-English questions into structured data queries, so analysts stop hand-writing them. A version within reach of a smaller team is an operations agent that reads a new client's intake form, creates the records across your systems and files the paperwork, which is what an n8n AI agent does well.

Finance and accounting

Ramp built an agent that resolves incorrect merchant reports in under 10 seconds instead of hours. In a smaller finance team, the same idea becomes an accounts payable agent: it reads each invoice, matches it to the purchase order, flags the exceptions for a person and queues the clean ones for one-click approval. It fits naturally inside wider accounting and finance automation.

Ecommerce and product data

Delivery Hero uses an agent to extract product attributes and generate titles to build a product knowledge base. Online retailers face the same problem at a smaller scale: thin supplier data and inconsistent listings. A product enrichment agent fills in attributes and descriptions, and a dynamic pricing agent watches competitor prices and adjusts yours within the margins you set.

Marketing and SEO

Airtable's Field Agents are AI-powered fields that gather insights and create content inside Airtable bases. Your build is a content agent that turns a research brief into an on-brand first draft, or a website growth and SEO agent that audits pages against what already ranks. As more buyers ask ChatGPT and Perplexity for recommendations, a generative engine optimisation agent tracks how AI answers describe your brand.

AI agents we have built for clients

The big-company examples prove the patterns work. These are agents and AI workflows we have delivered for growing businesses, with the results the clients measured.

What are the advantages of AI agents?

  • They take whole tasks off your team. An agent handles the reading, deciding and updating that sits between systems, which is where most manual hours go. In our loan prequalification project, a process that took days now runs in minutes.
  • They work around the clock. Customers get an answer at 11pm on a Sunday, and the queue is cleared before your team logs in.
  • They handle messy inputs. Unlike rule-based automation, an agent can read a free-text email, a scanned PDF or a WhatsApp voice note and still extract what it needs.
  • They scale without new hires. Volume can double without adding headcount, as the print shop saw when support costs fell by 25% while its customer base grew by 10%.
  • They make your data more consistent. Every action is logged and every record updated the same way, so the CRM stops drifting out of date.

What are the limitations and risks of AI agents?

  • Many projects stall. Gartner expects over 40% of agentic AI projects to be cancelled by the end of 2027, citing rising costs, unclear business value and weak risk controls.
  • They can be confidently wrong. A model can misread a document or invent a detail, so anything touching money, contracts or customers needs a review step.
  • Running costs add up. Every model call costs money. Using an agent for a step a simple rule could handle wastes budget.
  • Integration is the hard part. An agent is only as useful as the systems it can reach. Legacy software without an API needs custom connectors.
  • Governance needs an owner. Someone has to decide what the agent may do alone, review its logs and update it when the process changes.

Which platforms can you build AI agents on?

You rarely need a new platform. Most business agents are built on automation tools a company already uses, connected to a language model.

As a Make.com Platinum Partner and n8n Expert Partner, we choose the platform per agent, and agents that need self-hosting or complex logic usually become an n8n AI agent build. Teams already on Zapier can extend it with the help of a Zapier expert, and document-heavy knowledge assistants often start as a custom GPT.

Agent, automation or chatbot: which do you need?

Not every task deserves an agent. Reaching for one when a fixed automation would do is how budgets get wasted, and it is part of the reason Gartner expects so many agentic projects to be cancelled.

If the task is fixed and repetitive, plain workflow automation is cheaper and more reliable, and our workflow automation consultants can tell you which of your processes fall into that group. Reach for an agent when the work needs a decision made each time.

How to build your first AI agent

The agents that pay off start small and measured.

1. Pick one task. Choose something repetitive, clearly measured and forgiving of an occasional human check, such as lead qualification or invoice matching. 2. Set the baseline. Record how long the task takes today, how often it goes wrong and what it costs, so the return is obvious later. 3. Connect the data. Give the agent read access to the systems and documents it needs, and only the write access the task requires. 4. Add guardrails. Keep a person approving anything that touches money, contracts or customers until the agent has earned trust. 5. Build on your stack. Use the CRM, ERP and automation tools you already run rather than adding a platform. 6. Measure, then expand. Compare against the baseline after a few weeks, fix what goes wrong, then move to the next task.

That disciplined path is what our AI agent development work looks like in practice, and it is the difference between an agent that earns its keep and one that becomes a cancelled project.

The bottom line

The useful question is not what the biggest labs can build. It is which single job in your business an agent could take off your team's plate, reliably, with a person still in control. Pick that one, build it on the tools you have and measure it. When you want help scoping your first agent, book a call.

Frequently asked questions

What is an example of an AI agent?

A customer support agent that reads each ticket, checks the order in your systems, drafts the reply and escalates anything unusual is a common example. Others include accounts payable agents that match invoices to purchase orders and sales agents that qualify leads and book calls.

Is ChatGPT an AI agent?

On its own, ChatGPT is an assistant: it answers and then waits. It becomes an AI agent when it is given tools, memory and the autonomy to take several steps toward a goal, such as browsing, running code or updating a system without a prompt at each step.

What is the difference between an AI agent and a chatbot?

A chatbot answers questions; an AI agent takes action. A chatbot can explain how to reset a customer's account, while an agent can verify the account, perform the reset and log the change, escalating to a person only when needed.

How do I build an AI agent for my business?

Start with one repetitive, clearly measured task, keep a person in the loop for anything sensitive, and build it on tools you already use, such as Make, n8n or HubSpot. Measure it against a baseline, prove the return, then expand to the next task.
